T he acronym COP (Conference of the Parties) refers to the governing body of the international treaty (or convention). In the case of climate change, the international treaty is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The COP26 is the last stage of a process started in 1992. It took place in Glasgow in November 2021. Important results were also achieved with the Kyoto Protocol (1997, COP3) and the Paris Agreement (2015, COP21). Those taking part at COP26 decided to become carbon free at different times.

The deadline for European Union and the United States will be 2050, for China 2060 and for India 2070. At COP26 the attendees established new targets to significantly increase the decarbonisation by 2030. The new targets were negotiated in Paris in 2015. They include a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The commitment is to keep the total temperature increase below 2° C, and possibly below 1.5° C

This goal can be reached thanks to decarbonisation, resource efficiency, improvement of reuse and recycling, access to raw materials and circular economy, reduction of pollution and above all thanks to profound changes in technology, processes, products, services and to the behavior of consumers and businesses. Pagina 2 di 8 The main sectors requiring the use of fossil fuels are energy and transport, so they are the most involved sectors in the decarbonisation process. To achieve significant results, the European Union has established the Horizon Europe program. One of the main Clusters of the program includes Climate, Energy and Mobility
